Is Exam Anxiety Taking Over? Here’s How to Help Your Child Breathe Easier



Exams are coming. You mention revision and suddenly… your child’s shoulders tense up, their face tightens, and the complaints start rolling in. Sound familiar?

What Does Exam Anxiety Look Like?

✔ Refusing to start homework

✔ Crying or snapping over small things

✔ Zoning out or avoiding revision completely

How You Can Help at Home 🏠

The goal isn’t to eliminate stress entirely. It’s to help your child feel safe and supported enough to face it. Here are a few ways to ease the pressure:


1. Validate First, Problem-Solve Later

When your child says, “I’m so stressed,” resist the urge to reply, “Just study earlier lah!”

Try this instead: 🗣 “Exams can feel really scary sometimes. Want to talk about what’s stressing you out the most?”

Feeling heard helps anxiety shrink.


2. Create a Safe & Calming Study Zone

A quiet corner, good lighting, and a clutter-free desk can do wonders. Add a snack basket or fidget toy if that helps them focus.


3. Use a Timer, Not Pressure

Break revision into small, achievable sessions – 20–30 minutes followed by a short break. Kids don’t need 4-hour marathons. They need momentum.


4. Reframe the “What If” Thoughts

Instead of “What if I fail?” try: 💭 “What if I get better each time I practise?”

You can even roleplay these thoughts aloud to help your child see their own inner strength.


5. Celebrate Progress, Not Just Results

Did they revise even when they didn’t feel like it? Praise that effort. The more we focus on growth, the less scary the end result becomes.
