If Science Open-Ended Questions (OEQs) make your child feel like they’re decoding alien language, they’re not alone! Many students struggle with experimental-based questions, and it’s not because they don’t know the content - it’s because they don’t know how to explain their answers properly. So, how can we fix this? Let’s break it down!

🧐 The Most Common Mistakes in Science Experimental Questions

🔹 Not Identifying Variables Properly

Students often confuse independent, dependent, and controlled variables.

Quick tip: The independent variable is what you change, the dependent variable is what you measure, and the controlled variables stay the same for a fair test!

🔹 Writing the Wrong Experiment Aim

Should you use "If... then..." or "How does X affect Y?"? Many students mix these up! Remember:

  • "If... then..." is used when forming a hypothesis.

  • "How does X affect Y?" is used for experiment aims.

🔹 Missing Keywords in the Conclusion

A strong conclusion isn’t just a summary—it must include a clear relationship between the variables. Instead of saying, "The plant grew taller," a better answer would be:"The plant grew taller when exposed to more sunlight because photosynthesis increased."

🔹 Ignoring Command Words

Markers look for specific scientific explanations. Words like "explain," "describe," and "compare" require different response styles! Always check what the question asks before answering.

🔹 Forgetting About Accuracy & Reliability

How do you make an experiment more reliable? Many students mistakenly say "repeat the experiment," but the best answer is "repeat the experiment and take the average result."

💡 How to Improve Your Science OEQ Answers Instantly!

✅ Practice Answering with Scientific Precision

Be specific! Instead of saying "The experiment was fair," explain why it was fair using controlled variables.

✅ Use the CER Method (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning)For every conclusion, structure your answer like this:

  • Claim: What do the results show?

  • Evidence: What data supports it?

  • Reasoning: Why does it happen scientifically?

✅ Familiarize Yourself with Past-Year TrendsPSLE questions often follow patterns. Reviewing past-year questions can help identify tricky experimental setups and common pitfalls.
